As purveyors of high technology facilities, it made sense for Bosasa to give back by starting computer centre initiatives. We have set up many facilities across South Africa, which can be found in small communities and in high schools.
These centres are equipped with the latest computers and have all the necessary software installed to make them useful. They also have training aids and tools, which help teachers to guide both school children and offenders through all of the available courses.
Why is there a need for Prison Computer Centres?
Current statistics show that computer skills should be learnt no later than secondary school level. Unfortunately, this isn't realistic in South Africa and too many people are missing out on this type of education.
In our offender training programmes, we aim to rehabilitate people and provide them with real-world skills that can be used to find a job. Our computer centres placed within prisons provide offenders with opportunities, including:
- A basic understanding of computers – At each centre we provide basic training courses in computer use. Knowing how to use a computer is in fact a basic skill that many South Africans don't have the opportunity to gain. These skills include typing, browsing the Internet and learning how to use word documents or spreadsheets.
- Improve job opportunities – These skills might seem extremely simple, but when it comes to job prospects, they can increase a person's chances dramatically. In today's world, knowing your way round a computer is a necessity in almost any job.
- A chance to move on to higher education – There are many courses and diplomas that require computer skills in order to be able to take them. Offenders now have the chance to learn these and then get more training in a specific field.
Bosasa's integrated technology subsidiary, Sondolo IT, has been largely responsible for the success of our computer centres. Over the years, this division has seen what can result from community outreach programmes. Many of our employees have been drawn from previously disadvantaged communities, soon after going through one of our training programmes.
